Belgrano, the hidden garden of Buenos Aires
Last week we talked about Palermo, today we will take a look at Belgrano, one of the “must-places” to go to when visiting Buenos Aires. You can breathe history on its streets, museums and houses. It is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and you will find a mixture of ancient history along with modern shops that can make you virtually visit the 1800 and put you right back in the 21st century within a few blocks distance.
The history of Belgrano dates back to June 20, 1820 the day that the creator of the Argentinean flag, Manuel Belgrano, died; hence its name. Located on the northern area of Buenos Aires, Belgrano is known for its large dimensions and beautiful places, upper class residents live in this neighborhood. You will find early century houses, vast green spaces known as “barrancas” (ravines) as well as modern apartment buildings. If you are planning on renting a temporary apartment, Belgrano is surely a great choice.
Cabildo Avenue is the epicenter of Belgrano, famous for its shops where you can purchase clothes, movie theaters and cafes. Along with that, you will find museums like the Spanish Art Museum Enrique Larreta which is a magical place to visit. The museum is in fact Enrique Larreta’s house and has been kept intact. Inside it you can see art pieces from the 1800 brought from Spain by Enrique Larreta. The garden found in this house is famous in Belgrano and is a hidden treasure in the city.
Due to the vast territory of Belgrano we can find different divisions in it. Belgrano R is a small yet beautiful and quiet place of Belgrano. It is considered as an “oasis” in the middle of the city. Ancient English styled houses are common here and the wealthiest people of Buenos Aires live there.
Barrancas de Belgrano is another zone in Belgrano, as its name depicts you will find ravines which are now parks surrounded by modern apartment buildings. Lastly, there is Bajo Belgrano, near the River Plate (Rio de la Plata), this area has been recently renovated and we can also find the upper class living here.
This review of Belgrano neighborhood is just the beginning, we will continue to explore this magical place later on in another posts.
